My name is Beth Pawelski. I am a birth doula and mom to twin girls.
I am certified as an Advanced Holistic Birth Doula through The Matrona.
As a holisic doula, I embrace the 'Holistic Stages of Birth' that align with what your mind and spirit experience during birth as well as your physical body. I understand that birth is a largely non-linear experience that ebbs and flows according to the sensory experience of the mother.
We work together prenatally so you and your chosen partner can feel educated and empower yourselves to make the best choices for you and your baby or babies.
I can accompany you at any of our local hospitals and birth centers and at any home birth with a midwife. I am happy to travel within a one hour radius of South Bend, IN.
(Travel fee depending on distance thereafter.)
I have helped families with: Unmedicated Birth ~ Cesarean Birth ~ VBAC ~ VBAmC ~ Twins ~ Preemies ~Inductions ~ Epidurals ~
What is a Doula? And FAQ
A doula, also known as a labor coach, and originating from the Ancient Greek word δούλη (meaning female servant), is a nonmedical person who assists a woman before, during, or after childbirth, as well as her partner and/or family by providing information, physical assistance, and emotional support. The provision of continuous support during labor by doulas (as well as nurses, family, or friends) is associated with improved maternal and fetal health and a variety of other benefits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doula
And in my opinion, a doula believes in every patients right to evidence based information & informed choice regarding the health decisions you make for your child and yourself. Your body, your autonomy.
Does a doula replace my partner?
Not at all. In fact, it is most important for me to support your partner in being there for you. As your doula, I'm just part of the team. Expectant partners can feel a lot of anxiety about being the only support person. My aim is to hold the space that you and your partner share as you give birth.
What if I don't have a partner?
Then I'm all yours!
What services do you provide?
I provide emotional, physical & informational support to you and your partner before your birth, during your labor & in the early post-partum period. Doulas do not provide clinical care or assessment of any kind. That's left up to your midwife or doctor. I will attend births in a hospital or birth center as well as any birth at home that is attended by a Midwife.
I know that I'm having a cesarean birth, can you still help me?
A big, double yes! As a doula I believe in every woman's ability, but I also believe in a woman's autonomous decisions in her healthcare. Cesarean births have their place and it's just a fact of life that they happen. As someone who has had one, I can tell you it is not always an easy recovery (although women report recovering easily too). The hours after surgery can be difficult. Some experience nausea and side effects from anesthesia. Consider how nice it is to have someone anticipate your needs while you and your partner bond with your baby and to reassure your partner that what you are going through is normal and help them to gently support you. And if you are birthing alone and expecting a cesarean birth you can see by all the above the benefits of a doula for you.
